Summary: This paper presents a derivation of the complete differential equation describing dispersion effects in beds and other multiple-phase systems. The two standard forms of the differential equation are stated, the relation between them is developed and some of the potential errors in writing the equations are discussed. An example of using a solution of the comparable differential equation from heat conduction to provide a solution to a dispersion problem in packed bed is presented to illustrate the need for care in using such solutions.
