Response Characteristics in a Mail Survey

Description: Causes of nonresponse & problems involved in minimizing nonresponse bias with mailed surveys are examined. A survey of job attitudes & job behavior was mailed to 2,268 workers placed in employment by an employment service during a 1-month period & to their 1,713 employers. The effects of biographic variables & the substantive variables of pay, job training, & job attitudes on nonresponse are examined. Only minor bias is in evidence. Biographical characteristics typical of nonresponders are also typical of late responders, suggesting that the latter might be used as a proxy for the former. 2 Tables. Modified HA.
