Description: This thesis explores the portrayal of physically atypical bodies in the fiction of Flannery O'Connor. In particular, characters from Wise Blood , "The Artificial Nigger," and "Good Country People" represent a variety of physical anomalies. In these texts, the complex process of identification hinges on how the physically abnormal body is understood and presented. This project examines the ways in which O'Connor's work engages with perception and politics of the body that were exemplified by the convention of freak shows in America. When correlated with the historical phenomenon of the exhibition of extraordinary bodies, O'Connor's narratives take on new meanings and can be seen as telling depictions of a largely marginalized and historically mysterious group of people.
